How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your QS career.

Sample answer

I've been a quantity surveyor for eleven years, six in Oman. Started in QS at an Indian contractor, progressed through senior roles, and for the past four years I've been senior QS at an Omani contractor on major infrastructure projects. My remit: estimation, valuations, payment certification, variation management, final accounts. RICS-track plus civil engineering background.

Recent project: 60M OMR civil works contract. I managed contract administration throughout: monthly valuations, variations totalling 8M OMR, claims management, final account. Project closed with sustainable commercial outcome. QS work over contract life determines financial outcome.

Tell me about working with project leadership.

Sample answer

Project managers and directors care about commercial outcomes. I report transparently. I'm proactive on commercial issues. The relationship matters; QS that hides issues creates surprises.

Quantity verification on site. Rate per BOQ or agreed variation rates. Subcontractor accounts. Materials on site per contract. Net valuation. Variation impact. Total monthly progress. Certification supports payment cycle.

What they're really listening for

Sample answer

Claim circumstances documented as they occur. Time and cost impact analysis. Substantiation per contract requirements. Submission per contract timelines. Negotiation to resolution. Claims handled professionally; aggressive claims damage relationships and rarely recover full claimed value.

What they're really listening for

Claims depth.

How do you handle final accounts?

Sample answer

Comprehensive review: all variations agreed, all measurements verified, all claims resolved. Joint reconciliation with client QS. Sign-off with formal close-out. Final account is the conclusion; rigorous closure prevents post-completion disputes.

What they're really listening for

Final accounts.

Client refuses a legitimate variation. What do you do?

Strengthen documentation. Engage senior commercial leadership. Formal notice per contract. Escalation through proper channels. If still refused, evaluate dispute resolution per contract. Sometimes acceptance of partial recovery is right; sometimes formal dispute is necessary.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior QS role on major infrastructure at an Omani contractor I'd target OMR 2,400 to 3,200 total package depending on project scale. Roles with major contract administration responsibility pay a premium. I'd expect annual bonus and professional body renewal. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the project portfolio.
