How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.
Walk me through your cards technical career.
I've been in payment cards technology for nine years, four in Oman. Started at an Indian card processor (Wibmo / FSS) doing technical implementation of card products, moved into bank-side cards technology, and for the past four years I've been credit card technical consultant at an Omani Tier-1 bank. I work across the card management system, card production, ATM/POS routing, and fraud monitoring systems. I hold Visa and Mastercard technical certifications plus PCI DSS QSA-track training.

Tell me about a major implementation you led.
Two years ago I led the technical implementation of contactless cards across our portfolio: 400K cards reissued, card management system updated, ATM and POS fleet certified, and the new card production setup. Eighteen months of work. Required certification with Visa and Mastercard separately. Coordinated with operations for the reissuance logistics (significant operational lift). Contactless adoption now exceeds 75% of POS transactions. Major card implementations succeed on certification discipline; shortcuts in certification create production failures.
Major implementation experience.
Describe a production issue you resolved.
Our card management system had a transaction processing delay affecting POS authorisations: response times moved from 200ms to 800ms during peak hours. Investigated: database performance issue triggered by a recent vendor patch combined with growing transaction volumes. Worked with vendor on patch rollback plus database tuning. Restored under 250ms within 36 hours. Customer impact significant but contained; without fast response, declined transactions at POS would have damaged customer trust.
Crisis response in payment systems.
Tell me about a compliance issue you handled.
Our PCI DSS assessor identified a gap in encryption key rotation procedures. The technical fix was straightforward; the harder part was establishing the operational discipline so the issue didn't recur. I wrote the procedure, trained the team, and built monitoring to alert when rotations were due. Pass at the next assessment. Compliance isn't just about passing the audit; it's about embedding the practice so it stays passing.

Technical & role-specific
Questions that test your specific skills for this role.
Walk me through the card lifecycle in your bank.
Card application captured through digital or branch. Approval through credit decisioning system. Card profile created in card management system: BIN, product attributes, limits, fees. Card production triggered to perso bureau (chip personalisation, embossing). Distribution via courier with secure delivery. Activation by customer through SMS or mobile app. Ongoing servicing: PIN management, limit changes, replacement on damage or fraud. Closure: customer-initiated or bank-initiated for risk reasons. Every stage has security and regulatory requirements; understanding the full lifecycle is essential.
Cards-specific operational depth.
Describe your approach to scheme certification.
Visa and Mastercard certifications required for any new product, technology change, or scheme rule mandate. Process: review the mandate or change scope, identify all affected systems and flows, execute test cases per scheme test plans, document results, submit for scheme review. Schemes can take 4-8 weeks for review; plan accordingly. Test environments must mirror production. Test data sets curated per scheme requirements. Certification documentation maintained for audit. Treating certification as a checkbox creates failures; treating it as engineering verification creates reliable products.
Specific certification rigor.
How do you handle card fraud monitoring?
Transaction monitoring system (typically FICO Falcon or similar) running real-time scoring on every transaction. Rules tuned per merchant category, geography, customer profile. High-risk scores trigger holds and customer verification. Daily review of false-positive and false-negative patterns; rule tuning continuous. Working with the fraud operations team daily on emerging patterns. Communication with Visa and Mastercard on cross-border fraud trends. Card fraud is constantly evolving; defences must evolve too.

Situational
Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.
A new card product is being designed but the proposed feature has compliance risk. What do you do?
Engage compliance and legal early; share the proposed feature with specific compliance questions. Listen to their analysis. If risk is real, work with the business sponsor to redesign feature to comply. Don't approve technical implementation of features with unresolved compliance risk; the bank pays the regulatory penalties, the consultant pays the career penalty. Conservative voice in product design is part of the technical consultant's value.
Compliance discipline in product design.

Cultural fit & motivation
Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.
How do you work with operations and customer service teams?
Cards operations runs the day-to-day customer service for cards; their issues are signals I need to listen to. I attend their monthly operational reviews. When customer complaints reveal product or process issues, I take ownership of the fix. Technology that doesn't serve operations is technology that won't get used. The relationship is service-oriented; my job is making their job possible.
Service-oriented mindset.

What are your salary expectations?
For a senior credit card technical consultant role in Oman banking I'd target OMR 2,000 to 2,600 total package depending on bank size and product portfolio. Roles with international scheme certification leadership pay a premium. I'd expect annual bonus. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the technology maturity of the bank; cards systems vary substantially across banks, and modern platforms offer better career experience than legacy.
Researched range and tech-maturity preference.
