Senior Engineer - Structure interview questions

Common interview questions and sample answers for Senior Engineer - Structure roles in Oil & Gas across Oman and the GCC.

The 10 questions below are compiled from interviews our consultants have run with Oil & Gas employers across Oman and the wider GCC. Each comes with a sample answer and what the interviewer is really listening for.

Category

Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your structural engineering career.

Sample answer

I've been a structural engineer for eleven years, five in Oman. Started in oil-and-gas structural design at an Indian consultancy, transitioned to operator-side, and for the past four years I've been senior structural engineer at an Omani oil operator. My remit: structural design and assessment for production facilities, pipelines, structural integrity management. Chartered Engineer plus relevant industry certifications.

What they're really listening for

Structural engineer scope.

Category

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about a major project.

Sample answer

Last year I led the structural design for a new gas processing facility: multiple structures including pipe racks, compressor shelters, control building. Twelve months of design and detailing. Project moving through construction. Structural engineering in oil-and-gas demands both design rigour and safety culture.

What they're really listening for

Real design delivery.

Describe a structural integrity finding.

Sample answer

Inspection found accelerated corrosion on a critical pipe rack. I led structural assessment: residual strength calculation, fitness-for-service per API 579. Recommended repair vs replace decision. Repair completed; integrity restored. Structural integrity management is engineering applied to ageing assets.

What they're really listening for

Integrity engineering.

Tell me about a design challenge.

Sample answer

Pipe rack design needed to accommodate future expansion without major rework. Designed with planned expansion provisions plus seismic considerations for the region. Structure now accommodates expansion projects without rework. Design with foresight pays back; design for current need alone creates future rework.

What they're really listening for

Design foresight.

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through your design approach.

Sample answer

Loading criteria per code and site-specific. Load combinations per code. Analysis methods appropriate to structure type. Design per applicable code (AISC, API, etc.). Connection design rigorous. Drawings for fabrication. Specifications. Documentation. Structural engineering follows code discipline.

What they're really listening for

Design methodology.

Describe seismic design for region.

Sample answer

Oman has specific seismic hazard zones. Design loads per regional code or international code with Omani parameters. Importance factor per structure criticality. Detailing for ductility where appropriate. Seismic design in moderate-hazard regions still matters for critical facilities.

What they're really listening for

Seismic depth.

How do you handle structural integrity assessment?

Sample answer

API 579 fitness-for-service for assessment of damage (corrosion, cracks, distortion). Inspection data integrated. Assessment levels per data and severity. Recommendation: continue operation, repair, retire. Documentation rigorous. Integrity assessment supports operational decisions on ageing assets.

What they're really listening for

FFS depth.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

A structural defect is found post-construction. What do you do?

Sample answer

Investigate the defect: location, extent, criticality. Assess against design intent and code. Decide: acceptable as-is, repair, redesign. Coordinate with construction and operations. Document decision rigorously. Structural defects need engineering judgement; rejecting acceptable defects costs project, accepting unacceptable defects creates safety risk.

What they're really listening for

Defect judgement.

Category

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with construction and operations?

Sample answer

Construction implements the design; operations live with it for decades. I engage both: constructability review during design, operational input on access and maintenance. Design that ignores construction or operations reality produces problems.

What they're really listening for

Lifecycle thinking.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior structural engineer role at an Omani oil operator I'd target OMR 2,400 to 3,200 total package depending on scope. Operator roles pay differently than consultancy. I'd expect annual bonus, professional engineering body renewal, training. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the asset portfolio quality.

What they're really listening for

Range preference.
