Category

Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your data migration career.

Sample answer

I've been in data migration for eight years, four in Oman. Started in data engineering at an Indian banking IT firm, specialised into migration over time, and for the past three years I've been tech lead for data migration at an Omani Tier-1 bank's transformation programme. My remit: migration strategy, tool selection, design, execution oversight across major migrations. Multiple data certifications plus tool expertise.

What they're really listening for

Data migration scope.

Category

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about a major migration.

Sample answer

Last year I led the core banking data migration: 5M customer records, 50M transaction records, historical data across 20 years. Eighteen months of work covering profiling, design, multiple test cycles, parallel run, cutover. Data integrity preserved; business operations continuous through cutover. Major migrations succeed on rigorous methodology; ad hoc migration is how data goes missing.

What they're really listening for

Major migration delivery.

Describe a migration issue.

Sample answer

Test migration revealed data anomalies that weren't visible in source profiling: edge cases triggered by specific historical conditions. Documented every anomaly; designed handling per anomaly type. Final migration handled all categories. Migration testing surfaces what profiling misses; rigorous testing pays back.

What they're really listening for

Migration discipline.

Tell me about leading the team.

Sample answer

Eight engineers reporting to me on migration: ETL developers, data analysts, validators. Workload distributed per skill. Daily standups during execution phases. Joint review of edge cases. Team morale strong despite intense work; people perform when they feel supported.

What they're really listening for

Team leadership.

Category

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through your migration methodology.

Sample answer

Data profiling source. Mapping to target with transformation logic. Reconciliation rules defined. Multiple test cycles: each with progressively more realistic data and conditions. Parallel run validates target against source in production-like conditions. Cutover with rollback plan. Post-cutover reconciliation. Methodology discipline determines outcome.

What they're really listening for

Migration methodology.

Describe data profiling.

Sample answer

Source data examined for completeness, validity, consistency, uniqueness, relationships. Anomalies catalogued. Patterns surfaced. Edge cases identified. Profiling output drives mapping decisions and transformation logic. Time invested in profiling reduces surprises during migration.

What they're really listening for

Profiling depth.

How do you handle reconciliation?

Sample answer

Multiple reconciliation levels: record counts, field totals, sample record comparison, business-meaningful aggregates. Reconciliation rules cover the data dimensions that matter. Discrepancies investigated to closure. Sign-off only after reconciliation completes. Reconciliation rigour is the difference between a successful migration and a migration that introduces problems for years.

What they're really listening for

Reconciliation depth.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

Late in migration testing, business identifies a fundamental data issue. What do you do?

Sample answer

Honest assessment of impact. Engage business and programme leadership with the situation. Decide: accommodate via additional transformation, defer migration for source-system fix, scope reduction. Decision goes to programme governance with full information. Hiding fundamental issues to maintain schedule produces failed migrations.

What they're really listening for

Transparency.

Category

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with business owners?

Sample answer

Business owns the data semantics; my role implements migration with their oversight. I engage them in mapping decisions, validation of edge cases, sign-off on outputs. Their domain knowledge prevents migration errors. The relationship is partnership.

What they're really listening for

Business partnership.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior tech lead for data migration role at an Omani Tier-1 bank I'd target OMR 2,800 to 3,600 total package depending on programme scope and team size. Major-migration leadership commands a premium. I'd expect annual bonus and certification budget. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the transformation programme's strategic positioning.

What they're really listening for

Range preference.
