Category

Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your SharePoint career.

Sample answer

I've been a SharePoint developer for five years, two in Oman. Started in SharePoint 2013/2016 on-premises at an Indian SI, transitioned to SharePoint Online, and for the past two years I've been SharePoint developer at an Omani enterprise. My remit: SPFx development, site customisations, workflow integration. Microsoft SharePoint certifications.

What they're really listening for

SharePoint scope.

Category

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about a SharePoint project.

Sample answer

Last quarter I built a department intranet hub: communication site as landing, hub navigation across team sites, custom webparts for news and events. Two months of work. Engagement metrics positive in first quarter. SharePoint intranet done well builds team cohesion; done poorly becomes shelfware.

What they're really listening for

Real delivery.

Describe a customisation.

Sample answer

Built a custom SPFx webpart for displaying KPI dashboards: pulls data from multiple sources, role-based display, responsive design. Three weeks of work. Used across multiple sites. SPFx customisation is productive when patterns are understood.

What they're really listening for

Customisation work.

Tell me about working with users.

Sample answer

Users want SharePoint to work like they expect, not how Microsoft documented. I respect their patterns. I deliver UX that fits their work. Training when necessary. Adoption matters more than feature count.

What they're really listening for

User-centric work.

Category

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through SPFx development.

Sample answer

React-based webpart development. Component patterns for reusability. PnP libraries for SharePoint interaction. Performance awareness on data calls. Responsive design. Solutions deployed via app catalog. Testing across browsers. SPFx is the modern SharePoint customisation model; embracing it produces maintainable customisations.

What they're really listening for

SPFx depth.

Describe SharePoint site design.

Sample answer

Information architecture per business need. Hub sites for navigation. Communication sites for broadcast. Team sites for collaboration. Permission discipline. Page templates for consistency. Search configured for discoverability. Modern SharePoint architecture supports flexibility; legacy thinking produces friction.

What they're really listening for

IA depth.

How do you handle permissions?

Sample answer

Permission inheritance preferred; broken inheritance only when needed. Groups for assignment, not individuals. Permission audit periodically. External sharing per policy. Permission discipline prevents access creep over years.

What they're really listening for

Permission discipline.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

A user reports SharePoint search isn't finding their content. What do you do?

Sample answer

Investigate: is content indexed, is metadata complete, is search query well-formed. SharePoint search needs proper metadata and refiners; if content is poorly tagged, search returns poor results. Educate users on tagging discipline. Search quality reflects content management quality.

What they're really listening for

Search troubleshooting.

Category

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with stakeholders?

Sample answer

Stakeholders want results; I deliver. Direct on technical constraints. Patient with non-technical questions. Respectful of their domain knowledge. The relationship matters.

What they're really listening for

Stakeholder mindset.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a mid-level SharePoint developer role at an Omani enterprise I'd target OMR 900 to 1,300 total package depending on scope and team responsibility. Roles with significant SPFx development pay more. I'd value Microsoft certification budget. I'm on 30 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the M365 strategy.

What they're really listening for

Range preference.
