OCI Database Engineer interview questions

Common interview questions and sample answers for OCI Database Engineer roles in IT & Technology across Oman and the GCC.

The 10 questions below are compiled from interviews our consultants have run with IT & Technology employers across Oman and the wider GCC. Each comes with a sample answer and what the interviewer is really listening for.

Category

Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your Oracle Cloud database career.

Sample answer

I've been an Oracle database engineer for ten years, four in Oman. Started on Oracle on-premises at an Indian bank, transitioned to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure over the past four years, and for the past two years I've been OCI database engineer at an Omani enterprise migrating to cloud. My remit: Autonomous Database, Exadata Cloud Service, Database Service on OCI, migration planning, cost optimisation. OCI Database Specialty and OCP certified.

What they're really listening for

OCI cloud-database depth.

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about a major cloud database migration.

Sample answer

Last year I led the migration of our main ERP database from on-premises Oracle to Exadata Cloud Service. Used Data Guard for the migration approach with minimal downtime. Twelve weeks of preparation including network connectivity (FastConnect), security setup, and dress rehearsals. Production cutover during weekend window with 4-hour business impact (within plan). Post-migration tuning for cloud-specific characteristics. ERP runs well on Exadata Cloud; performance improved while cost optimised.

What they're really listening for

Real cloud migration experience.

Describe a cost optimisation effort.

Sample answer

Our OCI database costs were higher than budget post-migration; investigated and found over-provisioning. Right-sized: Autonomous Database scaled down for non-prod environments using auto-scaling, Exadata Cloud Service base-shape adjusted for actual workload pattern. Used Reserved Capacity for predictable production. Cost reduced 35% with no performance impact. Cloud cost optimisation requires active management; default settings rarely match actual workload.

What they're really listening for

Cloud cost discipline.

Tell me about a security configuration.

Sample answer

Designed the security baseline for our cloud database tenancy: VCN isolation, private endpoints (no public IPs on databases), Data Safe for monitoring, encryption with customer-managed keys via OCI Vault. Database accounts following least-privilege. Audit logs flowing to OCI Logging. Independent assessment confirmed configuration. Cloud database security needs explicit configuration; defaults aren't sufficient for enterprise contexts.

What they're really listening for

Cloud security depth.

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through your migration approach.

Sample answer

Assessment first: current database, dependencies, migration goals, downtime tolerance. Tool selection: Data Pump for low-criticality, Data Guard for low-downtime, ZDM (Zero Downtime Migration) for major migrations. Network connectivity (FastConnect or VPN). Test migration in non-prod with full validation. Dress rehearsal with timing. Production cutover with rollback plan. Post-migration monitoring. Cloud migration is project management plus technical execution; treating it as just technical work misses the management dimension.

What they're really listening for

Migration methodology.

Describe your approach to Autonomous Database.

Sample answer

Autonomous Database removes much routine DBA work (patching, backup, tuning), but the engineer's role shifts to design and oversight. Configure auto-scaling. Set CPU and storage limits per environment. Manage user provisioning and security. Monitor and respond to alerts. Plan for cloning between environments. Use ATP for transactional workloads, ADW for analytical. Cost management ongoing. Autonomous works best when used as designed; over-engineering around it negates its value.

What they're really listening for

Autonomous DB knowledge.

How do you handle HA/DR on OCI?

Sample answer

Cross-region Data Guard for tier-1 critical databases (Muscat-Frankfurt as common pattern). Backups to Object Storage with cross-region replication. RTO and RPO targets per workload tier; tier-1 minutes, tier-2 hours, tier-3 day. DR drills regularly. Documentation maintained on switchover procedures. OCI native HA features (RAC, GoldenGate) used where appropriate. Cloud HA/DR is more accessible than on-premises but still requires deliberate engineering.

What they're really listening for

Cloud HA/DR depth.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

OCI is having a regional issue affecting your databases. What's your response?

Sample answer

Engage OCI support immediately. Assess impact: which databases affected, what's the service degradation, is failover needed. If DR failover criteria met, execute the documented switchover. Communicate to affected stakeholders. Monitor recovery. Post-incident review with OCI on the underlying cause and our response. Cloud incidents are different from on-premises (different controls, different escalation paths) but require similar discipline.

What they're really listening for

Cloud incident handling.

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with application teams during cloud migration?

Sample answer

Cloud migration affects applications; collaboration matters. Application teams need to understand the changes (connection strings, network paths, performance characteristics). I engage early in planning, communicate clearly during execution, and support post-migration. Some applications need adjustment for cloud (e.g., assumptions about local file storage). The migration succeeds when application teams are partners, not when they're just told.

What they're really listening for

Migration partnership mindset.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior OCI database engineer role at an Omani enterprise I'd target OMR 2,400 to 3,200 total package depending on cloud estate scale and on-call expectations. Cloud specialism with major migration leadership commands a premium. I'd expect annual bonus and continued certification investment. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the organisation's cloud strategy; cloud-native organisations vs cloud-skeptical produce different career experiences.

What they're really listening for

Researched range and strategy preference.
