Walk me through your SQL Server career.
I've been a SQL Server DBA for nine years, four in Oman. Started in SQL Server administration at an Indian SI, progressed through senior DBA roles, and for the past three years I've been MS SQL expert at an Omani enterprise. My remit: SQL Server estate of 80+ instances across versions 2016 through 2022, Always On for HA, Azure SQL for cloud workloads. MCSE Data Platform, plus working on Azure database specialty.
SQL Server scope.

Behavioural (STAR)
Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Tell me about a major project.
Last year I led the SQL Server consolidation: from 120 instances on aging infrastructure to 80 on modern platform plus Always On for the most critical. Six months of work. Outcome: footprint reduced, performance improved, HA properly engineered. Database consolidation done well reduces operational burden; done poorly creates new operational issues.
Real delivery.
Describe a performance issue.
Critical application's queries were degrading; latency complaints from users. Profiled: missing indexes, query plan regressions after schema growth, statistics stale. Tuned: indexes added, statistics refreshed, query hints where needed. Performance restored. SQL Server performance work is engineering; rigour pays back.
Performance work.
Tell me about a critical incident.
Production database corruption mid-business-day; application affected. Engaged Microsoft support, executed restore from backup with point-in-time recovery, validated, brought back online. Recovery time 3 hours against 4-hour RTO. Post-incident: underlying storage issue addressed, additional monitoring. Backup and recovery isn't theoretical; rigorous restore testing means recovery is procedure, not improvisation.
Crisis handling.

Technical & role-specific
Questions that test your specific skills for this role.
Walk me through your DBA practices.
Standardised configurations per workload tier. Backup with proper retention and validation. Patching schedule with testing. HA via Always On where workload demands. Performance monitoring continuous. Security: encryption, access controls, audit. Documentation maintained. Lazy DBA practices produce visible problems eventually.
DBA discipline.
Describe Always On AG.
Availability groups for HA with multiple replicas. Synchronous replicas for critical workloads (zero RPO). Asynchronous for DR replicas across distances. Listener for client connectivity. Failover testing on schedule. Read-only routing for analytical workloads. Always On provides HA done well; configuration discipline matters.
AG depth.
How do you handle Azure SQL?
Azure SQL Managed Instance for migration of on-premises workloads. Azure SQL Database for new cloud-native applications. Auto-tuning enabled where appropriate. Cost management active (right-sized, reserved capacity for predictable workloads). Backup and recovery per Azure service capabilities. Cloud database management shifts what you manage; doesn't eliminate management.

Situational
Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.
A new application wants direct database access patterns you consider problematic. What do you do?
Engage the team. Understand their needs. Articulate concerns: performance, security, maintainability. Propose alternatives that serve their needs without the patterns I'm worried about. If patterns are genuinely required and risks are manageable, accommodate with monitoring. DBA's value is technical wisdom applied collaboratively.
Collaborative DBA.

Cultural fit & motivation
Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.
How do you work with application teams?
Application teams own queries; my role optimises the database tier. I respect their schema design while flagging issues. Joint reviews on performance-critical queries. The relationship is collaborative; DBAs and developers who trust each other produce better outcomes.
Cross-team collaboration.

What are your salary expectations?
For a senior MS SQL expert role at an Omani enterprise I'd target OMR 1,800 to 2,400 total package depending on estate scale and 24/7 on-call. Multi-version plus cloud expertise commands a premium. I'd expect annual bonus, on-call allowance, certification budget. I'm on 30-60 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the cloud-migration trajectory.
