IPA Developer interview questions

Common interview questions and sample answers for IPA Developer roles in IT & Technology across Oman and the GCC.

The 10 questions below are compiled from interviews our consultants have run with IT & Technology employers across Oman and the wider GCC. Each comes with a sample answer and what the interviewer is really listening for.

Category

Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your IPA development career.

Sample answer

I've been an IPA developer for five years, two in Oman. Started in RPA at an Indian RPA partner, expanded into IPA, and for the past two years I've been IPA developer at an Omani Tier-1 bank. My remit: bot development on UiPath, document understanding components, workflow integration. UiPath certifications plus ongoing learning.

What they're really listening for

IPA dev scope.

Category

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about a bot you developed.

Sample answer

Last quarter I built a bot automating customer onboarding document processing: OCR of submitted documents, validation against KYC rules, data entry into core banking, exception routing to humans. Three months of work. Bot processes 200+ applications daily with single-digit exception rate. IPA delivers value when build is rigorous.

What they're really listening for

Real bot delivery.

Describe a difficult automation.

Sample answer

Process I was automating had a step that depended on a legacy mainframe screen. UiPath could interact but reliability was poor. I worked with infrastructure to expose a service interface from the mainframe; bot then used the service instead. More work upfront, better reliability. Sometimes the right fix isn't in the bot.

What they're really listening for

Engineering judgement.

Tell me about debugging in production.

Sample answer

Bot was failing intermittently with screen-scraping errors. Investigated: subtle timing issue when a target application was slow. Added wait conditions plus retry logic. Reliability improved from 92% to 99%. Bot reliability is engineering; ad hoc fixes don't sustain.

What they're really listening for

Debugging depth.

Category

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through your bot development.

Sample answer

Process design from business and architect. Implementation in UiPath with modular workflows. Error handling at each significant action. Exception routing for human intervention. Logging comprehensive. Configuration externalised. Testing rigorous. Deployment via Orchestrator. Documentation maintained.

What they're really listening for

Real methodology.

Describe your testing approach.

Sample answer

Unit testing of workflows. Integration testing with target systems. Volume testing with realistic data. Exception scenario testing explicitly. UAT with business team. Testing rigour determines production reliability.

What they're really listening for

Testing discipline.

How do you handle document understanding?

Sample answer

OCR for text extraction. Document understanding components for structured information capture. Validation rules per field. Confidence thresholds for auto-route vs human review. Continuous improvement based on actual exception patterns. Document understanding pays back when properly tuned.

What they're really listening for

DU depth.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

Process the bot automates changes mid-development. What do you do?

Sample answer

Pause development. Understand the change. Assess impact: minor adaptation or material redesign. Discuss with business stakeholder. If material, replan timeline. If minor, adapt. Bots automate processes; when processes change, bots must change too.

What they're really listening for

Adaptation.

Category

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with business users?

Sample answer

Business users know the process; my role is automating it. I shadow them initially to understand reality vs documented process. I demo prototypes. I'm patient with feedback. The relationship matters for sustained partnership.

What they're really listening for

Business engagement.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a mid-level IPA developer role at an Omani Tier-1 bank I'd target OMR 1,200 to 1,600 total package depending on scope and platform expertise. UiPath specialism commands a premium. I'd value certification budget. I'm on 30 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the automation programme maturity.

What they're really listening for

Range preference.
