Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your MDM career.

Sample answer

I've been on Informatica MDM for seven years, three in Oman. Started in data quality at an Indian SI, transitioned to MDM, and for the past three years I've been Informatica MDM senior consultant at an Omani Tier-1 bank. My remit: customer MDM platform covering 4M+ customer records, golden record management, integration with source systems and consuming applications. Informatica MDM certifications.

What they're really listening for

MDM scope.

Category

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about an MDM implementation.

Sample answer

Two years ago I led the customer MDM implementation: consolidation from five source systems, golden record creation, match-merge logic, data steward workflows, integration with consuming applications. Eighteen months of work. Outcome: customer view unified; downstream systems served by single source of truth. MDM done well transforms how organisations think about customers; done poorly creates another inconsistent data store.

What they're really listening for

Real MDM delivery.

Describe a data quality issue.

Sample answer

Match-merge logic was creating false matches: customers with similar names being merged incorrectly. Tuned: matching rules refined with stronger weights on secondary identifiers, threshold adjusted, human review for borderline cases. False match rate dropped to acceptable level. MDM matching is judgement-intensive; theory meets messy real-world data.

What they're really listening for

Quality engineering.

Tell me about working with business stewards.

Sample answer

Data stewards have business knowledge MDM needs; their feedback shapes data quality and matching rules. I respect their domain expertise. I'm direct on technical constraints. Stewardship workflow designed for their reality. The relationship matters; stewards who feel heard engage productively.

What they're really listening for

Stewardship partnership.

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through MDM architecture.

Sample answer

Hub-based architecture: customer hub as the system of record. Source systems push data via standardised feeds. Match-merge produces golden records. Data steward workflows for exceptions. Consumption via APIs and event-based propagation to downstream. Architecture serves multiple consumers; designing for current need plus expected evolution.

What they're really listening for

MDM architecture.

Describe your match-merge approach.

Sample answer

Matching rules per entity type. Weights per attribute based on discriminating power. Thresholds tuned to optimise true positive vs false positive. Automated vs human review per threshold zone. Cleansing and standardisation upstream of matching. Match-merge is engineering applied to fuzzy identity; rules pay back over years.

What they're really listening for

Match-merge depth.

How do you handle survivorship?

Sample answer

Survivorship rules per attribute: which source wins, what date rule applies, what completeness consideration. Documented for transparency. Steward override capability for exceptions. Survivorship logic that's clear is maintainable; opaque survivorship creates trust issues with consuming applications.

What they're really listening for

Survivorship.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

A consuming application reports stale data. What do you do?

Sample answer

Investigate the propagation: source update timing, hub processing, downstream delivery. Identify where the delay or failure occurred. Fix the immediate issue. Address systemic cause: faster propagation if needed, better monitoring on delivery. MDM consumers depend on timely data; staleness erodes trust.

What they're really listening for

Operational rigour.

Category

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you handle multilingual / cross-cultural data?

Sample answer

Arabic and English names common in Omani context. Transliteration handling. Multi-script support in matching. Cultural naming patterns considered (single names, family names, regional variations). Standardisation rules respect data variety while enabling matching.

What they're really listening for

Local-context awareness.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior Informatica MDM consultant role at an Omani Tier-1 bank I'd target OMR 2,000 to 2,600 total package depending on platform scope. MDM specialism is in limited supply. I'd expect annual bonus and certification budget. I'm on 60 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the bank's data strategy.

What they're really listening for

Range preference.
