IBM Power Specialist (PowerVM, AIX, PowerVC, PowerSC) interview questions

Common interview questions and sample answers for IBM Power Specialist (PowerVM, AIX, PowerVC, PowerSC) roles in IT & Technology across Oman and the GCC.

The 10 questions below are compiled from interviews our consultants have run with IT & Technology employers across Oman and the wider GCC. Each comes with a sample answer and what the interviewer is really listening for.

Category

Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your IBM Power career.

Sample answer

I've been on IBM Power for ten years, four in Oman. Started in AIX administration at an Indian banking IT firm, expanded into PowerVM virtualisation, PowerVC management, and PowerSC security, and for the past four years I've been senior Power specialist at an Omani Tier-1 bank. My remit: Power estate covering critical workloads (core banking, DB2 databases), virtualisation strategy, security, capacity. IBM certifications across AIX, PowerVM, PowerVC.

What they're really listening for

IBM Power scope.

Category

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about a major Power project.

Sample answer

Last year I led the Power9 to Power10 refresh: 12 frames migrated, 200+ LPARs, PowerVM live partition mobility for minimal downtime, performance characterisation post-migration. Six months of work. Outcome: significant compute uplift, footprint reduced, ready for current workload growth. Power migrations need careful planning; live migration capabilities are powerful but complex.

What they're really listening for

Power delivery.

Describe a Power incident.

Sample answer

Production Power frame had a hardware fault; one LPAR running a critical workload affected. Live partition mobility moved the LPAR to another frame within 15 minutes; service impact minimal. Hardware vendor engaged for replacement. Lesson: HA features like LPM pay back when you need them.

What they're really listening for

Power crisis handling.

Tell me about working with IBM support.

Sample answer

Complex AIX kernel issue last year required IBM TAC engagement. Provided detailed problem statement, environment data, traces. Worked through to root cause; IBM identified a defect with fix in later TL. Workaround applied. TAC effectiveness scales with engagement quality.

What they're really listening for

TAC engagement.

Category

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through AIX administration.

Sample answer

Standard system configuration. Patching per IBM technology level cadence. Performance monitoring (nmon, topas). Backup with NIM and mksysb. Network configuration with EtherChannel where appropriate. Security hardening per CIS benchmarks. AIX is mature; the basics applied consistently produce stable systems.

What they're really listening for

AIX depth.

Describe PowerVM management.

Sample answer

HMC managing frames and LPARs. Dual VIO servers for redundancy. Storage and network virtualisation through VIOs. Dynamic LPAR configuration where workload demands. Live partition mobility for hardware maintenance. PowerVM is the foundation for modern Power flexibility.

What they're really listening for

PowerVM depth.

How do you handle PowerSC?

Sample answer

PowerSC for security and compliance: Trusted Boot, security automation, compliance profiles. Continuous compliance monitoring against banking-relevant standards. Trusted firewall on AIX. Security automation reduces manual hardening drift. Bank compliance benefits from PowerSC's structured approach.

What they're really listening for

PowerSC depth.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

A critical workload needs more capacity urgently. What do you do?

Sample answer

Assess capacity options: dynamic LPAR resize, move to less-loaded frame via LPM, capacity activations from capacity on demand. Implement the right option per actual constraints. Document and follow up on permanent capacity planning.

What they're really listening for

Capacity response.

Category

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with application teams?

Sample answer

Application teams depend on Power for critical workloads. I respect that dependency by being responsive. I'm direct on platform requirements (capacity, downtime windows) while flexible on solutions. Service mindset.

What they're really listening for

Service mindset.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior IBM Power specialist role at an Omani Tier-1 bank I'd target OMR 2,200 to 2,800 total package depending on estate scale and 24/7 on-call. Power specialism is in limited supply. I'd expect annual bonus, on-call allowance, IBM certification budget. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the platform strategy.

What they're really listening for

Range preference.
