Category

Opening & warm-up

How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.

Walk me through your ERP administration career.

Sample answer

I've been an ERP system administrator for seven years, three in Oman. Started in SAP Basis administration at an Indian SI, expanded to multi-ERP administration, and for the past three years I've been ERP system administrator at an Omani enterprise. My remit: user management across our ERP estate, security, transports, performance monitoring, backup coordination. Stack: SAP Basis with NW 7.5/S4 backbone, plus Oracle EBS administration.

What they're really listening for

ERP admin scope.

Category

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about a major administration project.

Sample answer

Last year I led the SAP basis upgrade from NW 7.4 to 7.5: technical upgrade planning, testing, production execution. Six months of preparation, weekend cutover. Live without major incident. ERP upgrades succeed on planning; rushed execution creates production crises.

What they're really listening for

Major delivery.

Describe a critical incident.

Sample answer

SAP production system unresponsive mid-business-day. Triaged: identified work process exhaustion due to a runaway job. Killed the job, restored normal processing. Investigated underlying cause: developer had introduced an inefficient loop in custom code. Coordinated fix with development team. Post-incident: better load testing on custom code, runaway-job monitoring. ERP incidents are stressful; structured response prevents chaos.

What they're really listening for

Incident handling.

Tell me about transport management.

Sample answer

Transport landscape rigorous: dev to QA to prod with proper testing at each stage. Approvals required for production transport. Rollback procedures documented. Transport conflicts managed. Transport discipline determines whether changes reach production cleanly or create incidents.

What they're really listening for

Transport methodology.

Category

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through SAP Basis operations.

Sample answer

Daily system check: work processes, dispatcher, background jobs, locks, dumps. Performance monitoring. Transport management. User and security administration. Patch management. Backup verification with DBAs. Capacity monitoring. ERP basis is unglamorous but determines operational stability.

What they're really listening for

Basis depth.

Describe security administration.

Sample answer

Role-based access control. Authorisation objects designed per business function. Segregation of duties matrices. User assignment per role. Periodic access reviews. Emergency access procedures. Audit logs maintained. ERP security is foundational; lazy here creates regulatory and operational exposure.

What they're really listening for

Security depth.

How do you handle performance?

Sample answer

Performance monitoring continuous. Slow transactions investigated. SQL trace for query analysis. ABAP runtime analysis for code. Database statistics maintained. Buffer sizing reviewed. Performance work is engineering; ad hoc tuning doesn't sustain.

What they're really listening for

Performance methodology.

Category

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

A patch is causing issues but rollback is risky. What do you do?

Sample answer

Investigate the actual impact: severity, affected users, workarounds available. Engage SAP support if needed. Decide based on full information: forward-fix vs rollback. Communicate to stakeholders honestly. Document the incident. Patch incidents are common; the response process matters more than the immediate decision.

What they're really listening for

Risk-aware decision.

Category

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with functional and technical consultants?

Sample answer

Administration enables their work; I respect their delivery pressure. I'm direct on requirements (testing, change control); skipping them creates production issues. The relationship is service-oriented.

What they're really listening for

Service mindset.

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior ERP system administrator role at an Omani enterprise I'd target OMR 1,600 to 2,200 total package depending on stack and 24/7 on-call expectations. Multi-ERP administration commands a premium. I'd expect annual bonus, on-call allowance, certification budget. I'm on 30-60 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the team's modernisation trajectory.

What they're really listening for

Range and trajectory preference.
