Opening & warm-up
How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.
Walk me through your infrastructure career.
I've been in infrastructure for eight years, four in Oman. Started in Windows administration at an Indian managed services firm, expanded into Linux and VMware, and for the past three years I've been Dell/VMware/Linux/Windows expert at an Omani enterprise. My remit covers our x86 infrastructure: Dell PowerEdge servers and storage, VMware vSphere, Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server. RHCE, VMware VCP, MCSA Server.

Behavioural (STAR)
Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Tell me about a major project.
Last year I led the vSphere upgrade from 7.x to 8.x across our 25-host estate: planning, testing, sequential upgrades, validation. Three months of work. Live without incident. Modern hypervisor brings security and operational improvements; deliberate upgrade discipline preserves stability.
Real delivery.
Describe an incident.
Storage performance degradation affected multiple critical workloads. Diagnosed: queue depth saturation on a particular array path. Tuned, rebalanced, and engaged Dell support for the underlying hardware issue. Service restored progressively. Lesson: storage performance issues cascade widely; structured response prevents broader disruption.
Incident response.
Tell me about working across teams.
Infrastructure underpins everything. I work with application teams, DBAs, network team, security. I respect each's priorities. I'm responsive on their requests. The relationship matters; collaborative infrastructure teams enable everyone, adversarial ones obstruct.
Cross-team collaboration.

Walk me through vSphere management.
Cluster configuration with HA, DRS, vMotion. Resource pools per workload class. Storage with proper multipathing. Network via distributed switches. Backup via Veeam or similar. DR via SRM where deployed. Templates for standardisation. Capacity monitoring. vSphere done well produces stable platforms.
vSphere depth.
Describe Linux and Windows operations.
Configuration management (Ansible for Linux, DSC or similar for Windows). Patching scheduled with proper testing. Monitoring via Prometheus / SCOM. Backup integrated with virtualisation backup. Security hardening per benchmarks. Both platforms benefit from the same operational disciplines despite surface differences.
OS depth.
How do you handle Dell hardware?

Cultural fit & motivation
Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.
How do you handle multi-vendor environments?
Multi-vendor is reality in most enterprises. I'm respectful of each vendor's strengths. I don't allow vendor politics to influence technical decisions. Each problem evaluated on its merits.
Vendor neutrality.

Closing
The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.
What are your salary expectations?
For a senior Dell/VMware/Linux/Windows expert role at an Omani enterprise I'd target OMR 2,000 to 2,600 total package depending on estate scale and on-call. Multi-platform expertise commands a premium. I'd expect annual bonus, on-call allowance, certification budget. I'm on 30-60 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the modernisation trajectory.
Range preference.
