Started as DBA on Oracle at an Indian banking IT vendor, expanded into MS SQL Server, then PostgreSQL, then platform-level concerns (HA, DR, performance, security across the database estate). For the past five years I've been senior specialist for database platforms at an Omani Tier-1 bank. Estate: about 200 database instances across Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB. I'm OCM Oracle plus MCSE on SQL Server.

Tell me about a major platform initiative.
Last year I led the database HA/DR uplift across our critical systems: standardised on Oracle Data Guard for Oracle, Always On for SQL Server, streaming replication for PostgreSQL. Recovery time objectives improved from 4 hours to 30 minutes for tier-1 systems. RPO improved similarly. Twelve months of work covering design, build, testing, switch-over drills. DR maturity is achieved through investment and discipline; many organisations talk DR without doing the work.

Describe a major incident you handled.
Production Oracle database crashed with an underlying storage issue mid-day. Engaged platform team, identified the recovery path (restore from backup with point-in-time recovery), and executed under pressure. Recovery time 90 minutes against the 4-hour RTO target. Business impact significant but contained. Post-incident: storage replacement, additional monitoring, recovery drill scheduled. Database disasters happen; preparation determines whether they're survivable.

Tell me about pushing back on a request.
Business asked for a major schema change with weekend turnaround for go-live. I pushed back: change of this scope needs proper testing in non-production, performance assessment, rollback planning. Risk vs reward didn't justify rush. Negotiated: smaller scope change for the weekend, full change planned for following month with proper process. Both achieved business need with appropriate risk. Speed sometimes is right; risk-blind speed isn't.

New database instances must meet standards before production. Standards prevent drift; without them, every database becomes a snowflake with unique handling.

Performance documentation maintained for systems where insights matter. Performance management is engineering, not magic; rigor produces predictable systems.

Data classification drives security level. Encryption at rest enabled by default; in transit also. Access controls role-based with least-privilege principle. Privileged access controlled through PAM tooling. Audit logging on every privileged access. Compliance with regulatory requirements (CBO Cybersecurity Framework, PCI DSS for cards systems). Annual penetration testing. Vulnerability management with prompt patching. Database security is high-stakes; the bank's most sensitive data lives here.

Engage early to understand the need. If standard databases can serve the need, prefer standardisation; supporting one more technology has long-term cost. If genuine technical reason for non-standard choice, evaluate properly: supportability, security posture, integration, total cost. If approved, develop the standards for it; ad hoc adoption creates problems. Standardisation is valuable; deviation should be conscious and managed.

Application teams own their applications; platform team supports their database needs. I respect their delivery pressure; rigid platform processes that slow them down create work-arounds. I'm direct on platform requirements (security, performance, operability); skipping these creates production issues. The relationship is collaborative; platforms team seen as enablement gets engagement, platforms team seen as roadblock gets routed around.

For a senior database platform specialist role at an Omani Tier-1 bank I'd target OMR 2,800 to 3,600 total package depending on estate scale and platform diversity. Multi-platform expertise commands a premium. I'd expect annual bonus and on-call allowance plus certification budget. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the team's cloud-migration trajectory; cloud-database experience matters for the next decade.
