Opening & warm-up
How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.
Walk me through your DG testing career.
I've been in data governance and testing for seven years, three in Oman. Started in data quality testing at an Indian banking IT firm, expanded into data governance testing, and for the past three years I've been data governance testing consultant at an Omani Tier-1 bank. My remit: testing data quality rules, validating governance controls, supporting regulatory data assurance. Data testing requires both engineering rigour and domain understanding.

Behavioural (STAR)
Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Tell me about a major testing initiative.
Last year I led the data quality testing programme for our customer data: 50+ critical fields tested, rules validated, gaps identified for remediation. Six months of work. Outcome: data quality measurably improved, ongoing testing process established. Testing without remediation is theatre; testing with remediation drives quality.
Real testing delivery.
Describe a governance control finding.
Testing revealed that some data access controls weren't being applied consistently. Documented finding, engaged governance team, supported remediation, retested. Control compliance restored. Testing surfaces gaps that confident assumptions miss.

Tell me about working with governance team.
Governance team owns the framework; my role tests its operation. I respect their design; they respect testing rigour. Findings discussed before publication. Joint remediation. The relationship is collaborative.

Technical & role-specific
Questions that test your specific skills for this role.
Walk me through DQ testing methodology.
DQ dimensions: completeness, validity, consistency, uniqueness, integrity, timeliness. Rules per critical attribute. Tests automated where possible. Results reported with trend tracking. Remediation drives improvement. DQ testing without rules is ad hoc; rules without testing is theory.
DQ methodology.
Describe governance control testing.
Control inventory. Tests per control verifying design and operating effectiveness. Sample sizing appropriate to risk. Results documented per audit standards. Findings classified by severity. Control testing supports audit and regulatory readiness.
Control testing depth.
How do you handle data sampling?
Risk-based sampling: more samples on high-risk data, less on low-risk. Statistical sampling for population assertions. Targeted sampling for known risk patterns. Sample preservation for audit. Sampling is engineering applied to scale; without it, comprehensive testing is impossible.

Situational
Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.
You discover a material data quality issue affecting reports. What do you do?
Document the issue with evidence. Engage governance and data owner immediately. Assess scope: how many reports affected, what decisions potentially misinformed. Drive remediation; communicate to affected report users. Material data quality issues need transparent handling.

Cultural fit & motivation
Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.
How do you handle findings communication?
Findings communicated with rigour and respect. Evidence-based. Severity classified appropriately. Discussed with control owner before publication. Constructive tone aiming at improvement. Findings communicated badly damage relationships and undermine governance.

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.
What are your salary expectations?
For a senior data governance testing consultant role at an Omani Tier-1 bank I'd target OMR 1,800 to 2,400 total package depending on scope. Roles with significant regulatory engagement pay more. I'd expect annual bonus and certification budget. I'm on 60 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the governance maturity.
