How interviewers test your communication and preparation right from the start.
Walk me through your BCMS and DR career.
I've been in business continuity and IT DR for nine years, four in Oman. Started in IT operations at an Indian banking IT firm, specialised into DR, and for the past three years I've been BCMS/IT DR consultant at an Omani Tier-1 bank. My remit: BCMS programme support, IT DR strategy, DR drills, vendor management for DR. ISO 22301 plus DRI certifications.

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Tell me about a major DR initiative.
Last year I led the IT DR uplift across our critical systems: target RTO and RPO defined per system, gaps closed through replication and backup improvements, runbooks updated, drill schedule established. Twelve months of work. Outcome: DR maturity advanced significantly. DR work is rigorous engineering; it's tested when needed.
DR uplift work.
Describe a DR drill that surprised you.
DR drill discovered that our actual recovery time exceeded the documented RTO by 60%. Surprising despite confident runbooks. Investigated: documentation assumed certain conditions that weren't always true (dependency state, available resources). Refined runbooks against actual drill experience. Lessons: drills expose what theory doesn't; without drills, DR plans are aspirations.
Drill value.
Tell me about regulatory engagement.
CBO reviewed our BCMS programme; expectations had evolved. Led the response: documentation refresh, evidence ready, scheduled engagement. Outcome: positive examination with recommendations followed up. BCMS regulator engagement is mature when based on real practice.
Regulatory engagement.

Technical & role-specific
Questions that test your specific skills for this role.
Walk me through your DR architecture.
Tier-1: active-active or warm standby across regions for the most critical. Tier-2: cross-region with regular replication. Tier-3: regional with backup-restore approach. RTO and RPO per tier documented. Runbooks maintained. Drill schedule per tier. DR architecture serves business need, not technology elegance.
DR architecture.
Describe BCMS programme.
Business impact analysis identifies critical processes and their dependencies. Recovery strategies per critical process. Business continuity plans documented. Awareness and training. Exercise programme. Continuous improvement based on lessons. BCMS is engineering applied to organisational resilience.
BCMS depth.
How do you handle drill exercises?
Multiple types: tabletop for plan walkthrough, functional for technical recovery testing, full-scale for end-to-end. Schedule per system criticality. Realistic scenarios. Observers document. Lessons captured. Improvements implemented. Without rigorous drills, plans are theory.
Drill discipline.

Situational
Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.
A DR drill reveals a major gap. What do you do?
Document the gap honestly. Engage relevant stakeholders on remediation plan with timeline. Track progress. Re-test after remediation. Communicate progression to leadership. Drills that find gaps without driving remediation are theatre. Drills that drive real improvement are operational maturity.
Gap remediation discipline.

Cultural fit & motivation
Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.
How do you handle BCMS stakeholder engagement?
BCMS affects everyone but is owned by few. I engage broadly: each business function on their plans, IT on their recovery capability, executive on programme oversight. I'm patient with the educational component; BCMS isn't familiar to most. Sustained engagement matters.

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.
What are your salary expectations?
For a senior BCMS/DR consultant role at an Omani Tier-1 bank I'd target OMR 2,200 to 2,800 total package depending on programme scope and regulatory engagement. Roles with significant strategic responsibility pay more. I'd expect annual bonus, on-call allowance, certification budget. I'm on 60-90 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the bank's resilience commitment.
