Walk me through your AV career.

Sample answer

I've been an audio-visual planner for six years, three in Oman. Started in AV systems integration at an Indian SI, expanded into planning and design, and for the past three years I've been AV planner at an Omani enterprise. My remit: meeting room and event space AV design, vendor management, project oversight for installations. AVIXA CTS certified plus vendor-specific certifications.

Behavioural (STAR)

Past-experience questions. Use the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Tell me about an AV project.

Sample answer

Last year I led the executive conference centre AV: high-end videoconferencing, presentation systems, room control, recording. Six months of planning and installation. Live and used in major corporate events. Modern AV done well is invisible; done poorly is highly visible.

What they're really listening for

AV delivery.

Describe a challenging room.

Sample answer

Acoustically problematic space; standard mics produced poor pickup. Worked with acoustics specialist: room treatment plus appropriate microphone array selection. Audio quality acceptable. Some rooms need engineering, not just standard kit.

What they're really listening for

Engineering judgement.

Tell me about working with users.

Sample answer

Users want AV that works without thinking. I design for that: simple interfaces, reliable operation, support when needed. Complex AV systems with sophisticated features but poor user experience get abandoned.

What they're really listening for

UX orientation.

Technical & role-specific

Questions that test your specific skills for this role.

Walk me through room design.

Sample answer

Room purpose and use cases. Acoustics assessment. Sightlines and viewing. Microphone strategy per speaker types. Display sizing per viewing distance. Video conferencing kit appropriate to use case. Room control. Cable management. Documentation. AV design has many dimensions.

What they're really listening for

Design depth.

Describe Zoom/Teams room integration.

Sample answer

Native room systems vs bring-your-own-device approach. Standard vendor kits (Logitech, Poly, etc.). Room calendar integration. Single-button-join experience. Update management for room devices. Modern collaboration room standardisation enables simpler operations.

What they're really listening for

Collaboration room depth.

How do you handle vendor management?

Sample answer

Multiple vendor relationships: AV integrator, manufacturer support, professional services. Each managed per scope and value. Performance reviewed. Issues escalated. AV vendor management matters; quality varies significantly.

Situational

Hypothetical scenarios designed to test your judgement and approach.

A board meeting is starting and AV isn't working. What do you do?

Sample answer

Immediate diagnosis: check obvious (power, cables, equipment status). If can't restore quickly, deploy backup (mobile setup, phone bridge). Communicate clearly. Investigate root cause post-event. Board AV failures are highly visible; structured urgent response matters.

What they're really listening for

Crisis handling.

Cultural fit & motivation

Why this role, why this company, and how you work with others.

How do you work with corporate events team?

Sample answer

Events teams have specific needs for major events; AV failures are highly visible. I'm responsive and reliable. Pre-event walkthroughs. Onsite support during major events. The relationship matters; events teams remember reliable AV support.

What they're really listening for

Category

Closing

The final stretch. Often where deals are won or lost.

What are your salary expectations?

Sample answer

For a senior AV planner role at an Omani enterprise I'd target OMR 1,200 to 1,600 total package depending on scope and project complexity. Roles with significant transformation responsibility pay more. I'd value AVIXA certification renewal. I'm on 30-60 days' notice. Beyond pay I'd value the technology budget.

What they're really listening for

Range preference.
